La Vie Vu Linh new destinations in Vietnam
Thứ Tư, 27 tháng 1, 2016
After being inspired by an attractive introduction about a very interesting destination in Vietnam that I came across on a magazine, I decided to set off to find the special place. This is what I read about Thac Ba Lake in Vietnam: “The whole region provides the perfect setting for a weekend escape in rural-most Vietnam.
Better still, the area is home to the LaVie VuLinh eco-lodge, which means you can forget about work, absorb some culture and “travel responsibly”, all at the same time”. I was sure it’s what I had been looking for, a quiet place for a weekend escape, where I could enjoy fresh nature and rustic local culture. And indeed, Thac Ba, Yen Bai is exactly what I read. It was truly an interesting experience I really want to share.
Vietnamese people call this area mid-land, which is typical with beautiful and charming palm trees covering the sloping hills, the land of some ethnic people such as Dao, Tay, Nung, Cao Lan, which is promising to be explored. An untouched and pretty area appeared simply without any immediate impress, but it brought a strange feeling dragging me to explore more and more behind the narrow paths of palms.
La Vie Vu Linh, the eco-lodge with a lovely name, where I live is located in a rural area, known as an ideal eco-destination for a special hideaway, thus I was a little bit curious to see it. It took me 5 hours to get here from Hanoi by car, but the car cannot reach the lodge, so there’s normally two ways for visitors to reach here, one is taking a boat for about 20 minutes and the other is driving motorbike or trekking for 10 minutes.
Panoramic view of Thac Ba Lake
My car took me to a ferry to embark a boat and cross the lake. Never before had I imagined that the lake was so big like this. I was more than surprised to be told that it’s an artificial lake. It is really huge with an area of more than 23,000 ha and about over 1,000 islands, which used to be hills on land. It’s the reason why there are a lot of isolated hill tribe islands, which makes the area seem very unique.
The water of the lake is blue and clear, and imprinted with the reflections of the surrounding forests. Sitting on the boat among immense water view was so peaceful and leisurely. Not only was I impressed by the amazing natural beauty but also by friendly locals. Smiling people welcomed me everywhere, from a frank Dao guy at the ferry to a group of fishermen on the next boat.
They waved me and said the language of friendliness. Time seemed not to fly on the boat and right at the time I was too curious to explore this interesting land, I saw a charming island on which a pretty eco-lodge nestled in verdant plants. It’s La vie Vu Linh where I would live.

As soon as I had stepped on the island, I knew why it is called an ideal place for an amazing escape. It is a beautiful traditional stilt house with moisture-wicking, Dao beautiful roof style, massive decorated beams, covered by palm leaves. It looks incredibly charming in my eyes, a rustic bungalow in a great location, looking over an immense lake, such an excellent view for a base of a journey.
Great view from the eco-lodge
I spent two fabulous days at this amazing eco-lodge, where I wallowed in the beauty and serenity of Thac Ba Lake. No sooner had I arrived this eco-lodge than I realized that it’s an ideal hideaway for me that weekend.
Inside the wooden house is rustic but very clean and neat. Although they offer two private rooms with private bathroom as well, which are very pretty but affordable and suitable if you go with your partner for a romantic getaway, I chose sleeping in the common room, where visitors can share a same place but still have privacy in separated departments. It’s the traditional living way of Vietnamese ethnic people on their stilt houses, which was so interesting for me to experience.
What I enjoyed the most was that I can let myself soak up the subtle and complex Dao culture contemplating the assembly of the frame wood, lying on my comfortable mattress, lulled by the gentle breeze coming from the lake.
Gorgeous sunset view from La Vie Vu Linh
Getting up at La vie Vu Linh is a lovely experience. You feel the peace and the air, smell the fresh nature when your eyes open, and it’s time for you to take a deep breath, and enjoy the pure panoramic view of Thac Ba Lake in the early morning.
There’s a nice bar under the house, where they also serve Western food for visitors, and I myself think its owner was very wise to decide doing this as although their guests are very interested in this rustic local life, they are likely to “miss” a basic western breakfast when they are far away from home. After the breakfast, I went for a trekking tour through the mysterious paths of palms which I had been very curious to explore.
The longer I trek, the more interesting things made me surprise. It’s an incredible rustic and peaceful life behind the palms. I was told about the unique culture of Dao people and explore their houses. I was treated with the most delicious lake fish I have ever tried before, and really happy like a baby to enjoy very fresh meat and vegetables made by the friendly locals.

Here I was aware of the true value of my life and what the true happiness is. Sometimes, people are too busy and forget about the core value of their life. Indeed, it could originate from our very trivial round, just a friendly treatment, an exquisite meal, or a new lesson about a new culture, etc. To me, happiness is travelling and learning from my trip.
Although it is an amazing destination for visitors to enjoy incredible natural beauty of Vietnam’s countryside and mountains, few local travel companies offer tours here. One in the small number is Exotic Voyages, which now as I know the best luxury agent designing tour to this special destination. They allow different kinds of tailor made tours, and have many experienced travel experts who can help you customize your own tour to Thac Ba Lake. It could be a relaxing escape for you and your lover, a memorable adventure for your group of close friends, or an interesting culture trip for your family. Whatever you are interested in, I think you will find here with the help from Exotic Voyages.
